How to stop overthinking when your mind won't switch off
You lie down tired, and your mind starts up again. The message you sent. The thing you should have said. Tomorrow's list. You are not weak for struggling to switch it off. Your mind is working very hard to keep you safe, and it hasn't yet learned that it can rest.

Does this feel familiar?
- You go over the same conversation again and again, looking for what you did wrong.
- You lie awake at night with your mind running through everything that could go wrong.
- You read too much into a short reply and spend the day worrying about it.
- You look calm on the outside while your chest feels tight all day.
Five ways to stop overthinking, starting today
- Come back to your senses. When your thoughts start racing, look for three things you can see, two things you can hear and one thing you can touch. Say them quietly to yourself. It moves your attention out of the loop and back into the room you are actually in.
- Give your worries an appointment. Choose fifteen minutes in the late afternoon as your worry time. When a worry arrives at any other moment, jot it down and tell yourself, “Not now. Later.” When your worry time comes, look at the list. You may find some of it no longer feels urgent.
- Write the loop down. Overthinking repeats because it never lands anywhere. Write the thought out in full, exactly as it plays in your head. On paper, a thought you have had a hundred times becomes a few lines you can look at, and question.
- Breathe out for longer than you breathe in. Breathe in for a count of four and out for a count of six. Keep going for two or three minutes. A slow, longer exhale is one of the simplest ways to tell your body it can slow down.
- Separate the fact from the story. Take one worry and split it in two. The fact: “She hasn’t replied to my message.” The story: “She’s upset with me and I’ve ruined everything.” The fact is usually small. The story is what keeps you awake. Noticing the difference is the first step to choosing a kinder story.
Why it can feel stuck even when you know you’re overthinking
You already know that replaying the conversation won’t change it. You may have told yourself to stop a hundred times. You may have heard “just think positive” more often than you can count.
The trouble is that overthinking is rarely only a thinking problem. When your body feels on alert, your mind keeps scanning for what might go wrong next. Logic alone can’t switch that off, which is why trying harder to stop thinking often makes the thoughts louder.
There is a gentler way to see it. An overthinking mind is a mind trying to protect you. It doesn’t need to be fought. It needs to feel safe enough to rest.
How I can help
I work beneath the level of everyday thinking, where the pattern begins. NLP coaching helps you notice the inner language and beliefs that keep the loop running, and practise choosing a different response. BodyTalk works with what your body is still holding, so your whole system has a chance to settle. At the Durban clinic, frequency healing with tuning forks offers a calm, grounding session focused on helping your nervous system settle.
As I often say, “Where focus goes, energy flows.” Together we work on where your focus goes, gently and at your own pace. The aim is for you to feel calm, clear, confident and in control again.
It starts with a free discovery call. It is private, there is no pressure, and you only share what feels right.

Questions women often ask
Is overthinking a sign of anxiety?
It can be. Overthinking and anxiety often travel together, and each can feed the other. It can also show up simply because you are stressed, tired or unsure. If anxiety is affecting your daily life, please speak to your doctor as well.
Can coaching help with anxiety?
Coaching can support you. It helps you notice the patterns that keep worry going and practise calmer ways of responding. It works alongside medical care, never instead of it. If you are receiving treatment for anxiety, please continue it and keep your doctor informed.
Can I do sessions online?
Yes. NLP coaching and BodyTalk both work by video call, and I work with women in the UK, UAE, US and across South Africa this way. Frequency healing with tuning forks happens in person at the Durban clinic.
What happens on the discovery call?
It is a free, private 15-minute call online. You talk about what you are going through, I answer your questions, and together we decide whether working together feels right. There is no obligation to book anything.
